  • Skoda wins top honour at Which? awards

    Posted on 21 May 2010

Škoda has won the prestigious Best Car Manufacturer title in the annual Which? awards, presented at the British Museum yesterday (19 May).

Škoda trumped the competition – including premium brands – thanks to its outstanding customer service and products.

Škoda UK Director, Robert Hazelwood, said: “We’re really pleased to win this award. It shows just how highly Which? rates our products and service. We’re very proud of the excellent engineering and great value in every one of our cars, and pleased that Which? has recognised the outstanding personal service our retailers give their customers.”

The Which? car test team and Which? members were impressed with Škoda’s reliability, customer care and the quality of its retailers. Škoda achieved above-average marks for its retailers (79 per cent) and its service (81 per cent), and the brand had a reliability score of 79 per cent. Four Škoda models were judged to be ‘Best Buys’ or ‘Worth Considering’.

Which? Chief Executive, Peter Vicary-Smith, said: “Škoda is a car company ideally suited to the times, as people demand more but want to pay less. It offers a great range of reasonably-priced, well-built cars.”

Announcing the awards, he added: “The winner of this award is a car brand much praised by its customers, with high scores on dealer satisfaction for both sales and servicing. Owner satisfaction is also high, with most Which? members rating it as very good. The company also achieved a number of best buys for the various models we tested, making Škoda an obvious choice for Best Car Manufacturer 2010.”

Editor of Which? Car, Richard Headland added: “'People might know Škoda as a purveyor of value, but what they might not know is that this brand should be equally recognised for its quality of product, its reliability and its excellent retailer network.”

  • SKODA AUTO PRODUCES 500,000th SKODA OCTAVIA

    Posted on 23 Apr 2010

On 20 April 2007, the Skoda Auto plant in Mladá Boleslav produced the 500,000th Skoda Octavia, Skoda's best-selling model line at the moment. The 500,000th car is a silver Octavia RS with the powerful petrol engine 2.0 TFSI (147kW).

Commenting on the occasion, Horst Mühl, Skoda Auto BOD member responsible for production and logistics, said: "I wish to point out that besides Mladá Boleslav with 389,697 Octavias produced, those who have helped to achieve this milestone of 500,000 Octavias also include the plants in Vrchlabí and Aurangabad, India (105,080 and 5,223 vehicles, respectively). We needed 26 months to manufacture this number of vehicles - the very first vehicle was an Octavia produced on 3 February 2004 in Vrchlabí."

The Octavia Combi and Octavia Combi 4x4 followed in the autumn of the same year, in 2005 the model portfolio was extended with the Skoda Octavia RS and Skoda Octavia Combi RS, two "family sports cars". • Euro NCAP gives Yeti five stars

    Posted on 27 August 2009

The Skoda Yeti has achieved a five-star Euro NCAP rating, showing it to be one of the safest cars on the market. The Yeti was praised for its excellent adult and child occupant protection, as well as its protection for pedestrians.

Thanks to its stable body structure made of high-strength steel, the Yeti received an excellent 92 per cent in the occupant protection category. The protection provided by its airbags helped the Yeti score maximum points in the side impact category.

The Euro NCAP assessment report said: "Skoda has shown that it provides an equal degree of protection for passengers of all sizes, sitting in various positions (in all seats).

"Dr. Eckhard Scholz, Skoda Auto board of directors member responsible for technological development , said: "The result shows our commitment to safety aspects at the development stage [including] seat geometry tests and the strength of the applied materials. We test various seat settings and work hard to improve the properties of the entire system. To ensure maximum possible protection, the system must be in perfect harmony. We use state-of-the-art technology and test methods, as safety is one of the key aspects in developing new Skoda vehicles."

The Yeti's did particularly well in the whiplash test - a new category established this year to assess the stability of the seats and the degree of protection of the occupants from cervical spine injuries in rear impacts. The Yeti's result is one of the best of all the vehicles tested so far.

Skoda engineers put great emphasis on active safety when developing the Yeti. As required by Euro NCAP, the passenger airbag indicator light comes on when the airbag is deactivated. On starting the vehicle, an 'Airbag On' display informs the driver that the airbag is activated. As a standard part of the vehicle's equipment, the Skoda Yeti is fitted with the ISOFIX system for mounting child seats onto rear seats.
